At the source of this story lies a region in which water bears Celtic, Czech, Lusatian, German, Polish and Silesian names.
As woda, voda or wasser, it flows between histories, political visions, literature and art, collective memory and personal recollection. Despite the ideological roles ascribed to it, it crosses borders and erodes identity. Trans- and post-nationally, it irrigates places and nourishes the imagination. In the myths, legends and fantasies devoted to it, we continue to see ourselves reflected as a community and as a culture.
The exhibition “To-Water Identity. Navigations” unfolds as a journey through border waters, phantom waters and industrial waters. On old and new maps, hydronyms and watery hues appear; rivers flow that still exist, as well as those that no longer do. Digital streams of information merge with light-sensitive records of watercourses and reservoirs. From beneath the surface of landscapes surfaces the question “copper or to be?” For the local interrelations of bodies of water, mineral resources, energy and environmental condition form a complex water knot.
The exhibition comprises photographic works, a hydrokinetic installation, sound recordings, a projection of a water lexicon, and other objects inspired by research conducted as part of the project “Lower Silesian Through-Guide. The region’s waters as sites of memory and natural-cultural heritage.” This scientific-artistic undertaking, carried out by the Regional Research Workshop of the University of Wrocław in 2024–2025, extended not only across Lower Silesia but also the Kłodzko Region and Eastern Lusatia. Financial support was provided by the Marshal’s Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.
The exhibition runs from 6 February to 4 April.
